ELECTRO-STIMULATION (ES) THERAPY
White Lotus Acupuncture offers microcurrent therapy, frequency specific microcurrent (FSM), and color light probe therapies.
Sometimes less is more. That is one idea behind microcurrent therapy, a gentle, painless therapy that is effective for pain management and many other issues. In our society, we are meant to believe that bigger is better; this is not the case with energy medicines that work subtly and intrinsically with the body. With microcurrent therapy there are no physical sensations, such as muscle twitches, that occur in the body, treatment is occurring below the level of sensory nerve detection.
Do not be led to believe that you need to feel muscles twitching, or must tolerate some level of discomfort in order to have effective ES therapy. Quite the contrary, gentle, effective, microcurrent frequency has been proven to be just as, if not more, effective than high-intensity milliamp TENS therapy.
Microcurrent therapy can assist in regulating the energy levels of the body by promoting ATP (adenosine triphosphate) production, which is the major energy fuel for all the biochemical reactions of the body. As energy levels increase, the body's ability to remove metabolic wastes is enhanced, hence preventing accumulation of toxic substances, enhancing nutrient distribution and improving blood circulation, thus, helping the body produce new healthy cells and replace the injured ones. The ensuing enhancement in blood flow and decrease in inflammation translates into reductions in pain and muscle spasms, as well as increased range of motion.
Microcurrent therapy has been very effective for such conditions as soft tissue inflammation, muscle pain, fibromyalgia, neuropathy, bone bruising and old fractures and shingles.
Microcurrent -vs- Traditional TENS
TENS is the acronym for "Transcutaneous Electrical Neural (or Nerve) Stimulation". In reality, any device that stimulates the nerves through the skin is a TENS device. However, traditional TENS therapy uses high-intensity milliamp (mA) currents, measured in 1/1000th of a unit. This high-intensity milliamp current is used often in physical therapy, muscle reaction testing, and also in traditional ES acupuncture, the practice of delivering electrical current through acupuncture needles in the body.
TENS can be an effective therapy for temporarily pain control, however it is a more invasive procedure than microcurrent therpy, as it uses currents that are far in excess of what is required to support circulation and balance of the acupuncture meridian system.
Microcurrent (µA) therapy, in contrast to TENS, is a very gentle, low frequency pulsed electrical current, delivered in the millionths of an amps range. Microcurrent resonates with the body, as it is the inherent charge of the body's brainwave and heartbeat and is harmonious with the body's innate bioelectric activity.
Microcurrent therapy is a painless treatment that helps to relieve pain, decrease inflammation and assist in healing soft tissues of the body. Treatment with microcurrent is sub-sensational, meaning that the current resides below what the sensory nerves detect. Just as we do not feel the electrical charge in our brain and heart, we do not feel the sensation from microcurrent therapy.
What To Expect During Microcurrent Treatment
Microcurrent therapy is applied as an adjunct therapy during an acupuncture treatment. Microcurrent frequencies are delivered to the body through attached electrode pads, moist towels, or electrode probes. Treatment times vary depending on particular protocols for treatment, such as pain management, relaxation, or facial rejuvenation.
There is no discomfort during the treatment. Microcurrent delivers current in millionths of amperes (the same as human cells), allowing frequencies to resonate with the body’s energy. Treatment with microcurrent is sub-sensational, meaning that the current resides below what the sensory nerves detect. Just as we do not feel the electrical charge in our brain and heart, we do not feel microcurrent when it is applied as therapy.
Instructions Prior to Treatment
For optimum results you must be very well hydrated prior to treatment. We recommend drinking 32-64 ounces of water within 1-2 hours prior to your treatment. Please avoid applying any lotions, creams, oils, or perfumes before your appointment.
Drinking water after your treatment is also recommended to help flush out toxins that are being released from cells due to increased cell function.
Contraindications & Precautions for ES Therapy
ES therapy is not recommended for anyone who is pregnancy, has any active cancer, or any cancer within the past 2 years, uses a pacemaker or other electronic medical device, cardiac issues, such as irregular heartbeat, any history of seizures or epilepsy, or suffers from blood clots or phlebitis.
ES therapy is generally safe and side effects are not common. However, should they arise, they typically begin during or soon after treatment and may last for a few minutes to a few hours. Side effects are similar to those following the use of electrical devices such as ultrasound, EKG, etc. Side effects may include irritation at the site of stimulation, soreness, fatigue, light-headedness, drowsiness or transient weakness.
