CHINESE HERBAL MEDICINE
As acupuncture can be considered an external therapy, herbal medicine can be considered an internal therapy. Yin and yang therapies.
An Ancient Tradition, For Today
Chinese herbal medicine is a safe, effective, and drug-free way to become well and stay healthy, naturally. Chinese herbal medicine and acupuncture are complementary therapeutic modalities that are often used together in the treatment of a variety of medical conditions.
Chinese herbal medicine can be used to expedite the healing process, strengthen, and tonify the body. A properly prescribed formula has the capacity to address the underlying root cause of illness, whether acute or chronic, as well as minimize the specific symptoms of disease.
Chinese herbal formulas work on balancing the yin and yang forces in the body, and can be custom formulated to assist an individual's particular pattern of disease. Custom formulation can often blend anywhere from 2 to 20 herbs, designed to best support the healing momentum of the individual.
The traditional Chinese pharmacopoeia includes at least 6,000 species from the plant, animal and mineral kingdoms*, roughly 600 of which are commonly used today. Herbs are classified according to various properties with the two main categories being temperature (hot, warm, cool, cold, and neutral) and taste (bitter, sweet, salty, spicy and sour). The properties of individual herbs address specific organ systems and internal processes, while the synergy of a Chinese herbal formula allows for holistic treatment of the entire organism and supports longer-lasting relief and deeper healing.
Herbs are combined in formulas and offered as capsules, teas, tinctures, or powders. Herbs can be taken individually but more often are selectively combined into an elaborate formula that synergistically enhances their therapeutic effect and reduces side effects. A combination of substances can best be tailored to fit a patient’s individual pattern of signs and symptoms. Such unique formulations create a new therapeutic agent treating more effectively and completely than a single substance. This can be compared to the way we eat foods individually or combined to provide optimal nutrition. Classical Chinese medicine is a holistic practice that emphasizes treating the whole body rather than an individual sign or symptom.
Chinese herbs have a balancing effect on the body and are usually more gentle than synthetic drugs. However, drug-herb interactions are important to monitor so always let your practitioner know if you are taking any medications, other herbs or supplements. It is also important to let your practitioner know if you are pregnant or nursing. Pregnancy and fertility can be greatly supported through the use of Chinese herbs, however some herbs may not be appropriate with certain health conditions.
